THE EL TOVAR HOTEL

<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SEl Tovar Hotel is a former Harvey House hotel situated directly on the south rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.  It is a rarity because it is one of a very few original Harvey Houses still in operation today. The hotel was designed by Charles Whittlesey, Chief Architect for the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway and was opened in 1905 as one of a chain of hotels and restaurants owned and operated by the Fred Harvey Company in conjunction with the Santa Fe railway whose Grand Canyon Depot was 330 ft. away. El Tovar is an example of the architectural style that the National Park Service used for its lodges last century….

TAKE A BACKROADS TRIP: THE HISTORIC RIO PUERCO BRIDGE ON ROUTE 66 IN New Mexico

  Take a backroads trip on one section of the “Mother Road”- Old Route 66 and see the historic Rio Puerco Bridge in New Mexico. The Federal Government funded the Historic Rio Puerco Bridge on Route 66 in New Mexico in 1933 as part of President Roosevelt’s effort to use emergency monies for highway construction. Completed within a year, the bridge opened the Laguna Cutoff to transcontinental traffic. In 1937, the alignment officially became U.S. Route 66. WHERE TO STAY AT THE GRAND CANYON As oldies, we were looking for warm hiking and photography weather when visiting the Grand Canyon and surrounding area. It was important to us to arrive before summer vacation crowds so we planned our trip for April and early May. Our best advice is to start planning early! WHERE TO STAY Our first priority was finding a place to stay while at the Grand Canyon. Since we want to follow whatever roads interest us, we only made hotel reservations in three high traffic locations for our cross-country road trip-Grand Canyon; Page, Arizona; and New Orleans. TWO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TOUR COMPANIES IN PAGE, ARIZONA

One of our new favorite places in America is Page, Arizona because of the photographic opportunities. Numerous Slot Canyons and Horseshoe Bend near Page are unforgettable and on any photographer’s bucket list. Photographers and tourists head in droves to the famous Antelope Canyon. The tours are sold out months in advance so even crowded tours of Antelope Canyon were not an option for us. We were also told that people photographing Antelope Canyon were shuffled along in crowds and were given 2-minute shifts to take photos.
